A new report released by AirBNB shows that the senior citizens have become the newest demographic to seek the experiential lifestyle. As hosts and travelers, those over-60 are the site’s fastest growing demographic. AirBNB allows people from all walks of life to travel the globe economically. With the advent of airlines like Spirit and the reasonable lodging rates and quality of the lodgings AirBNB provides, its almost like stealing a vacation. In fact many say AirBNB revolutionised travel. The good and bad about AirBNB is that you have to pay in advance for your stay unlike most hotels or vacation rentals where you pay after your stay its also not unusual to get 40 to 70 percent off your lodging rate when using AirBNB.
In September AirBNB announced in a press release that, “Floridians in rural counties earned $24.7 million in supplemental income while welcoming 125,000 guests through the Airbnb vacation rental platform over the past 12 months, representing a remarkable 110% rate of year-over-year growth.”
“Delivering tourism — and the revenue that comes with it — to rural Northern Florida has been a longstanding goal,” said State Sen. Bill Montford, whose district includes 10 of the rural counties adjacent to Tallahassee. “When that tourism is delivering hundreds of thousands of dollars into the pockets of working-class Floridians in the process, that’s even better.”
“The agricultural communities I represent are hungry for economic development,” said State Rep. Ben Albritton, whose district includes the heart of DeSoto County and Hardee County. “Opening up these counties to people-powered tourism is putting valuable extra income into pockets of homeowners and hopefully will encourage more small businesses to invest in rural Florida.” This directly affects the pocketbooks of homeowners who are usually older baby boomers who can then afford to take vacations they’ve put off for years. Today, ask anyone over the age of 60 or so if they want to be put out to pasture for the rest of their lives the answer would be a resounding no and many are finding inspiration in the culture that is unafraid to experience life at its fullest. It seems that your’e never too old for YOLO after all!
